Field Trip to Kenya

On December 19th, 2018, Professor Liu Jisen, Director of Center for International Economic and Trade Studies and Executive President of IAS, GDUFS, and Dr. Zeng Yuran, Executive Director of Research Center for Global Marketing of Chinese Cultural Brand, paid a visit to Kenya, Uganda and South Africa.

On December 20th, 2018, researchers paid a visit to the Business School of Riara University. Riara University was the executive member of the council of “Belt & Road”African Studies Alliance, and Professor Kinoti was the Vice President of the council of “Belt & Road”African Studies Alliance. Founded in 2012, Business School of Riara University was intended to provide lectures, training and consulting services for business circle, participate in research, meetings and community services of business circle, and promote business innovation and development of enterprises, therefore, the school had been keeping a close relationship with the business circle. Research Center for Chinese Studies was founded in 2016, where research on China was conducted and exchanges were made among teachers and students. Up to now, the research center had greeted senior researchers from Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, paid a visit to Shanghai, attended the Forum on “Belt and Road” (Shanghai), sent two students to Shanghai Polytechnic University to participate in the summer exchange program, and sent two students to Wuhan University of Technology to participate in one-semester exchange program.

Prof. Kinoti made an introduction to Riara University and guided researchers to visit the campus. Prof. Kinoti’s team witnessed the nameplate unveiling of Kenya Research Base of Institute for African Studies.

Later, a symposium was held for the two research teams to exchange ideas on industrial cooperation, talent cultivation, public welfare program, etc. Two parties signed strategic cooperation agreement so as to enhance personnel visits and information sharing.

On December 21st, 2018, researchers paid a visit to Kenyan Pearl River Special Economic Zone, which was located in Eldoret, the Northern Kenya, and was famous for marathon runners.

Kenyan Pearl River Special Economic Zone adopts private model. The management personnel are all Chinese employees, while most of security guards are local employees. Guangdong New South Oversea Investment Holding Co., Ltd is the manager and operator, while the Kenyan government provides favorable policies. The first phase, with a total construction area of 700 acres, has been developed gradually. Five or six enterprises are expected to enter the industrial park in 2019.

When researchers arrived in Kenyan Pearl River Special Economic Zone, it was time for pre-Christmas celebrations. Researchers participated in the tug-of-war competition and the lap race to celebrate the festival with local people.

Institute for African Studies would pay a close attention to the development of Kenyan Pearl River Special Economic Zone and actively take part in For Baby, a public welfare program. Mr. Zhong Yongqiang, General Manager of Kenyan Pearl River Special Economic Zone, Miss Yu Dongman, Director of Public Relations Department, and Miss Guan Yan, Director of Investment Attraction Department, greeted researchers.
