On November 22, 2016, Mr Dai Bingguo, former State Councilor, Honorary President of the Advisory Committee of the Collaborative Innovation Center for 21^st Century Maritime Silk Road Studies and Guangdong Institute of International Strategies, visited the Institute for African Studies, GDUFS. During the visit, he spoke with research fellows from the institute on current international situation and gave his suggestion on constructing a new type of think-tank for the institute. He then formally announce the establishment of the institute.
