"'Belt & Road' Initiative and New Practice of China-Africa Cooperation" Held in Cairo

2019 Annual Meeting of “Belt & Road” African Studies Alliance and International Forum of “‘Belt & Road’ Initiative and New Practice of China-Africa Cooperation” was held on June 16th in Cairo, Egypt. It was hosted byBelt & Road” African Studies Alliance and Ain Shams University, organized by Institute for African Studies, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and Research Center for “Belt & Road” Initiative, Ain Shams University, and co-organized by Egypt China Trade Center and China News Weekly. Attending the meeting were over 80 people, including government officials, entrepreneurs, experts, scholars and researchers from Nigeria, Kenya, China, Egypt, etc., as well as media friends from People’s Daily Middle East Bureau, Guangming Daily Middle East Bureau, China Today Middle East Bureau, Al-Ahram Weekly, China National Radio International Channel, etc.

Dr. Hussien Eisa, Director of Research Center for “Belt & Road” Initiative of Ain Shams University, host the opening ceremony. Mr. Abd El Wahah Ezzat, President of Ain Shams University, Mr. Han Bing, Minister and Counsellor of the Chinese embassy in Egypt, Miss Huo Jiangtao, dean assistant of Institute for African Studies, Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, and Mr. Ma Qiang, Proprietor of China News Weekly deliver speeches.

Mr. Han Bing delivered a speech.

Mr. Han Bing said that great achievements had been made since the proposal of “Belt and Road” Initiative, and that “Belt and Road” Initiative would be implemented with high quality and high standard.

Miss Huo Jiangtao delivered a speech.

Experts and scholars deliver keynote speeches covering topics of China-Africa industrial promotion, the relation between Egypt’s economy and China-Africa cooperation, China-Egypt cooperation in the context of “Belt & Road” Initiative, industrialization and vocational career education development in African countries, new journey for cooperation in “Belt and Road” Construction, etc.

Miss Wu Lixing, representative of Tide Group, took “China-Egypt industrial cooperation” as the topic and spoke of what shall be valued in China-Egypt cooperation based on the current development of Tide Group in Egypt.

Dr. Hussien Eisa, Director of Research Center for “Belt & Road” Initiative of Ain Shams University, delivered a speech whose topic was “Economic relations and the Future of Cooperation among Egypt, China and Africa”. In his view, China-Egypt cooperation shall realize the gap between the goal and the reality, analyze risks and opportunities, and cultivate talents satisfiying the needs for economic development.

Mr. Xu Yuankun, representative of China Development Bank, thought that “Belt and Road” Initiative had already come into a new stage. China Development Bank would provide more support for Africa’s development and make greater contributions to the establishment of a community with a shared future for mankind

Dr. Heba Gamal Eldin, senior of Egyptian Academy of National Planning, talked about the political influence of “Belt and Road” Initiative on Egypt from the regional perspective. She mentioned that China-Egypt cooperation was faced with opportunities and challenges, and that economic cooperation shall also be established.

Dr. Hussien Eisa host the second keynote speech section. Miss Huo Jiangtao, dean assistant of IAS, Prof. Tamer Rady from Ain Shams University, Mr. He Chaowei from Jiasheng Nig Ltd, Nigeria, Prof. Kinoit from Business School of Riara University, Miss Xiong Qian, senior research of IAS, GDUFS, and Dr. Elsayed Mustafa Ebeed from Suez Cannal University delivered speeches one by one. They discussed Africa’s industrialization process and vocational education training, interest relation between egyptian economy and China-Africa cooperation, new opportunities for Egyptian economic growth in the context of China-US trade war, China-Egypt cooperation in the context of “Belt & Road” Initiative, etc.

Dr. Elsayed Mustafa Ebeed’s speech was quite inspiring and thought-provoking.

The year of 2019 marks the new beginning of China-Africa cooperation. The implementation of the outcomes of 2018 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation are planned in this year. President Xi proposed eight major initiatives, namely industrial promotion, infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, green development, capacity building, healthcare, people-to-people exchange, and peace and security. The meeting holds discussions about eight major initiatives, playing an important role in the building of a China-Africa community with a shared future and a community with a shared future for mankind.

Founded on October 28th, 2018, “Belt & Road” African Studies Alliance is set up to implement the outcomes of 2018 Beijing summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) which was held on September 3rd and September 4th, 2018. Gathering professional researchers and institutes for African studies from all over the world, the Alliance aims to serve as an interdisciplinary and cross-border communication platform to share resources, explore knowledge, disseminate technology, enhance understanding and promote applications. The Alliance now has 34 members, including 16 members from African countries, 16 members from China and 2 members from Europe. In the next 3 to 5 years, full coverage of research institutions for African countries studies will be achieved
